The Guanaco fiber is also very
rare. It changes texture when dyed so is
usually only available in its natural cinnamon
color. Like the vicunas, the guanacos are
relatives of the llamas and alpacas. They are also
native to the upper Andes mountains. They are
protected animals because of their sparse
population (about 500,000). They are partly
domesticated. Yarn made of this
fiber is very expense and is finer than the best
cashmere. |

Qiviut is the fiber of the
muskox, a protected Arctic bovine mammal. The
world population of these animals is only about
100,000. This fiber will not shrink when it
gets wet and it is very soft. |

Baby camel hair or camel down is very soft - only
slightly coarser than cashmere. It is produced
from the Bactrian camel. Camel fiber is
touted to be 30% warmer than sheep's wool.
The yarn can be purchased for about $15.00 per
1.75 ounces. Skein Scene offers a camel blend yarn
in Noro
Transitions
and Debbie Bliss
Fez. |
